Why not banded agate?

Here is the long awaited answer to why not banded Short-toed Treecreeper in the Presa del Rey.

This station wild bird ringing has been operating for over a decade, so you have well documented controls. In the case of Agatha found that recovering individuals previously ringed with a series of material attached to the ring in some cases even cause serious injury to the tarsus of the bird. Under this circumstance took the decision not banding this species and to verify the number of agate capturábamos season, what we did was establish a method of marking through a small cut in a particular primary or secondary feather. In this way we were able to tell if the agate we had on hand was a control or not in that same season.

But what caused this type of material injury to the tarsus of these birds when attached to the rings? Well, before starting with our theory, I must say that we are open to any comments that may establish the definitive cause, and it is this, a simple theory.

First believe that this material can be produced by a combination of factors. Instead, thanks to José Antonio Laperriere, we think that the main of these factors is a moth called Yponomeuta.

this moth caterpillars produce a carrier in which they take refuge from predators at the same time they can continue feeding on plants that have surrounded.

The agate way of eating together makes entanglement in these threads produced by the Yponomeuta and have the ring to cause wounds in the tarsi. Subsequent checks of agates marked in pens had some yarns or remnants of this material, but at no time injuries had occurred as when these individuals were carrying rings. This material adhering to the tarsi are found in other species, but have never seen injuries or major problems. Some of these species have been the CETI nightingale or the blue tit.

This is a hypothesis among others that have been considered as the material attached to the legs belonging to the seeds of poplars and is added along with other materials for sticky substances such as the stools will by aphids.

In short, whatever has led to no banding this species in the Presa del Rey.
